AC Milan edged Atalanta 3-2 in a breathless contest at San Siro to extend their unbeaten start to the Serie A season to seven matches.
Goals from Gonçalo Ramos and Adrien Rabiot put Milan in front in the first half, and Mario Gila made it three early in the second. Atalanta refused to give up, however, and fought their way back into the game. Gianluca Gaetano struck in the 66th minute before Nikola Krstovic found the net in the 81st. Ruben Amorim's men came under heavy pressure in the closing stages but held on to secure three crucial points.
Christian Pulisic had the ball in the net in the 14th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Five minutes later, Krstovic rounded goalkeeper Mike Maignan on a swift Atalanta break, only to fire into the side netting from a tight angle and waste a clear opportunity. Milan found the breakthrough in the 24th minute, Ramos coolly converting a penalty awarded for a Relja Obric handball inside the box.
In-form Rabiot doubled the lead in the dying moments of the first half. The French midfielder deftly controlled Diego Moreira's pass, shrugged off his marker and drilled a shot into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-0.
In an eventful second half, Omari Hutchinson's effort cannoned off the post, and shortly afterwards Milan won another penalty when Thomas Kristensen handled. Goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi saved Ramos's spot-kick, but from the ensuing corner Luka Modric's delivery was flicked on by Rabiot and Gila touched it home in the six-yard box to put Milan 3-0 up.
With the hosts easing off after establishing a three-goal cushion, Atalanta struck twice, first through Gaetano and then through Krstovic from Raoul Bellanova's pass, to cut the deficit to one. Maignan denied Davide Zappacosta in the final minutes to seal the win for Milan.
The result gave Milan their first Serie A victory over Atalanta since February 2023, ending a six-match winless run against them. With the Rossoneri now unbeaten in seven league games, Rabiot, who has scored in each of his last three matches, was one of the architects of the win.
