Bayern Munich cautious over Michael Olise ahead of Atlético Madrid clash

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl stressed that the club will not rush French star Michael Olise's return in order to avoid a long-term injury.

Olise, who came off with a knee injury in the closing stages of Saturday's Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund, trained on Monday with his knee strapped. Although the French winger has been included in the travelling squad for the Champions League trip to Atlético Madrid, it remains unclear whether he will feature.

With 12 goals and 6 assists in 13 matches for Bayern this season, Olise trails only Lamine Yamal (23) and Raphinha (20) for direct goal contributions across Europe's five big leagues.

With the status of veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also uncertain ahead of Tuesday's crucial encounter, Eberl gave an update on both players:

"We will assess Michael Olise again on matchday; we are monitoring the situation day by day. It's good that he is in the squad, because he is an exceptional player who always makes the difference. But we will certainly not take the risk of his injury turning into a long-term problem. As for Manuel Neuer, he has been out for a while, but he has started training again, so we'll see how he is."

Bayern Munich, who drew their last two Champions League matches (3-3 against Viking, 2-2 against Arsenal), have not recorded three consecutive draws in the competition for around 20 years. The German giants last had such a three-match run between October and December 2006. Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, have won only two of their eight meetings with Bayern in European competition, but they are unbeaten against them at home (2 wins, 1 draw).

Harry Kane, who has scored in each of his last 10 Champions League appearances for Bayern, said a tough test awaits them in the Spanish capital:

"We're going to face a very strong team, they are very good defensively. Their defence might be the first thing that comes to mind, but they are also very effective in attack. They particularly enjoy playing football when they go forward. They have very dangerous players in their squad, so we will certainly not underestimate them. We're expecting a very physical game; that's one of their biggest strengths. We need to be careful at the back and improve certain aspects of our game."
