Chelsea 1-1 Everton: Bronze's own goal costs the Blues top spot

Chelsea lost top spot in the Women's Super League (WSL) after being held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at home.

At Stamford Bridge, the Blues went ahead through Sandy Baltimore but had to settle for a point after a Lucy Bronze own goal, bringing their seven-match winning run to an end.

Sonia Bompastor's side started on the front foot and found the breakthrough in the 28th minute. From a well-worked corner routine, Lucy Bronze knocked the ball down and Sandy Baltimore headed it into the net.

However, Chelsea's lead lasted only five minutes. Yuka Momiki's cross into the box struck Bronze's heel and wrong-footed goalkeeper Hannah Hampton to bring the scores level. Shortly after the equaliser, Bronze headed against the crossbar, but the hosts could not find the goal to restore their lead and the points were shared.

Chelsea's dropped points allowed Manchester City, who thrashed West Ham 5-0, to move to the top of the table. In a match in which Khadija Shaw scored a hat-trick, Aoba Fujino and Iman Beney also netted their first goals of the season to take City two points clear at the summit.

Chelsea pass up their chance

The fact that Everton finished the game without managing a single shot on target made Chelsea's dropped points all the more striking.

The Blues, who had won 16 of their last 18 league meetings with their opponents, failed to find a winner despite attempting 20 shots in total and generating 2.14 expected goals (xG), and their hopes of an eight-match winning run were dashed. Bronze, making her 150th league appearance, endured an unfortunate 90 minutes with her own goal.

Everton, who have taken a point from two consecutive WSL matches for the first time in two years after a 22-match run without a draw, banked a priceless point despite registering their lowest shot count of the season (3).
