Gattuso bullish: "Lazio can keep surprising people"
After a statement win away at Juventus, Gennaro Gattuso believes Lazio can sustain their surprise run at the top of Serie A if they take it one game at a time.
Gennaro Gattuso believes Lazio can sustain their surprise run at the top of Serie A if they take things one game at a time, following a remarkable victory away at Juventus.
Goals from Oliver Provstgaard, Gustav Isaksen and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru sealed an emphatic 3-0 win at the Allianz Stadium for the capital club, a result that took them level on points with Inter at the summit of Serie A.
It was only the third time in Serie A history that Lazio have beaten Juventus away from home by a margin of at least three goals, following 3-0 wins in March 1964 and May 1995.
Lazio's 19 points from seven matches represent their best-ever start to a Serie A season, while Gattuso has become the first coach in the club's history to win six of his first seven league games.
Despite his side's superb start, the Italian coach is refusing to get carried away and believes anything is possible as long as they stay focused.
Speaking after the match, Gattuso said: "We shouldn't be looking at the table right now. We will enjoy this great win, but then we'll put our heads down and get to work for the Parma game."
The experienced coach added: "We're not used to being at the top, maybe we're not ready to be there yet, but if we take it game by game we can keep surprising people. Mentality and hunger were very important. We went in at half-time 1-0 up; we had taken risks against Milan and Venezia, but this time I think we took a step forward in terms of controlling the game. We're not yet at the level where we can manage a scoreline with maturity, so we have to keep playing with constant, intense pressure. That's what won us the game."
Despite a modest outlay of 16 million euros in their first transfer window under Gattuso, Lazio have got an immediate return from the likes of Davide Frattesi and Josip Sutalo. Gattuso stressed that the club had brought in players with strong characters, adding:
"This is the first time in my coaching career that I've been winning here. My staff and I put forward ideas, but it's the players who carry them out on the pitch, so they deserve the real credit. We work very hard in training and we've built a genuine family atmosphere here. The club also deserves credit; our transfer budget was small, but we sought out players with character and determination who wanted to come here at all costs. It took a bit of time, we didn't have much money, but coaching them makes my job a lot easier."
Lazio host Parma on Saturday, and with Inter not playing Fiorentina until Sunday, a win would give them the chance to go clear at the top on their own, having played a game more.
