Leeds United head coach Farke defends 'my butterfly' Bogle after Mathys Tel incident
Daniel Farke insisted Jayden Bogle, unpunished for a heavy foul on Mathys Tel in Leeds United's 1-0 win over Tottenham, is the Premier League's "gentlest player".
Speaking about Jayden Bogle, who went unpunished for a heavy foul on Mathys Tel in Leeds United's 1-0 win over Tottenham, head coach Daniel Farke insisted his player is the "gentlest player" in the Premier League.
Leeds United ended a five-match winless run, taking all three points at Elland Road thanks to a goal from substitute Noah Okafor.
However, the hosts were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men after Bogle's late challenge on Tel's Achilles tendon in the first half, which forced the Tottenham winger off. Following a four-minute VAR review, the incident was judged to be merely a "careless challenge" and the referee was not sent to the monitor.
Standing by his player after the match, Farke said: "I know Jayden Bogle would never foul anyone with bad intentions. It looked like an unfortunate contact, and Mathys getting injured was a very unlucky outcome. I know Jayden Bogle very well; the last thing you could say about him is that he is a rough player. Normally he is perhaps the gentlest player in the whole league. I always call him 'my butterfly'. He definitely had no bad intentions, I can guarantee that. Of course, I wish Mathys a speedy recovery."
The result extended Leeds United's unbeaten home run in the Premier League to nine matches (W5, D4), their longest such sequence since a 15-match run in 2001.
Expressing his satisfaction at heading into the international break in good spirits, Farke said: "There is no substitute for feeling the joy of victory in the dressing room after a match. This win was very important for the mood and confidence of the team. We have been through a difficult spell in recent weeks, but we won against one of the most in-form sides in the league. The lads were extremely determined and united. I congratulate every one of them."
