Luis Enrique: "Wins over Manchester City and Barcelona will count for nothing against Villarreal"
PSG head coach Luis Enrique has warned ahead of the Champions League clash with Villarreal that past results will not hand his side a victory in advance.
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has issued a warning ahead of his side's Champions League clash with Villarreal, stressing that past results will not hand them a victory in advance.
PSG have made a blistering start to their European campaign, winning all three of their league phase matches and scoring 14 goals to sit at the top of the table. After beating Slovan Bratislava 6-1, the French giants underlined their strength once again by defeating Manchester City and Barcelona 4-2.
Unbeaten in their last 13 Champions League matches (9 wins, 4 draws), PSG will equal the record for the longest unbeaten run by a French club in Champions League history if they avoid defeat against Villarreal (Lyon - 14 matches between December 2004 and March 2006).
Despite this impressive run, Luis Enrique warned against complacency, saying:
"If you think we will win this match because of the results we have achieved since the start of the season, you are mistaken. If we don't bring our hunger onto the pitch, show our quality and have the will to run for 90 minutes, it is impossible for us to win. We will all see Villarreal's quality; they are a very good team. They started with a tough schedule and have faced top-level opponents. We have to show that we are hungry from the first minute. No past score will help us in this match."
The two sides will meet for the first time in their history. Villarreal's most recent meeting with the defending champions in the competition came in the 2008-09 season against Manchester United, when both matches ended 0-0.
Since Luis Enrique took charge, PSG have not lost any of their four Champions League away matches against Spanish sides (3 wins, 1 draw). Before the Spanish coach's arrival, the French club had won only 2 of their 12 away matches in Spain (3 draws, 7 defeats).
