Manchester United 1-1 Manchester City: Terland's Goal Ends City's Winning Run in the WSL Derby
Elisabeth Terland's late equaliser earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the WSL derby, ending City's perfect winning run this season.
In the Manchester derby in the Women's Super League (WSL), Elisabeth Terland helped Manchester United come from behind to draw 1-1 with Manchester City, bringing an end to their rivals' perfect winning run this season.
Despite dominating much of the derby on home soil, Manchester United fell behind to a Khadija Shaw goal. Terland, however, struck in the 89th minute to earn her side a point and prevent City from returning to the top of the table.
Early in the match, Aoba Fujino's turning effort went narrowly wide, before United took control. Ella Toone and Jess Park both tested City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.
The hosts also started the second half on the front foot. After an error from Alex Greenwood, Yamashita denied Terland's close-range effort. Park then saw a powerful strike from the edge of the box crash against the crossbar.
As the tempo rose, United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce made a crucial save to keep out Shaw. In the 66th minute, however, the Jamaican forward took centre stage. Creating space for herself despite close attention from Dominique Janssen, Shaw found the net in her 100th league appearance to put City ahead.
As United pushed for an equaliser, City found dangerous counter-attacks. Tullis-Joyce denied Fujino, while Maya Le Tissier cleared Grace Clinton's effort off the line.
The goal the hosts had been waiting for arrived in the 89th minute. Following up well on a header from Le Tissier's cross that Shaw tried to clear, Terland beat Yamashita with a powerful first-time strike to make it 1-1.
Shaw, who scored her 91st goal in her 100th league appearance, extended her record as the player with the most goals in her first 100 matches in the competition's history. The Jamaican forward also became the first player to score in each of her first 6 league starts of a season.
Having avoided a third consecutive defeat to their rivals, Manchester United became the first team to take points off City in the league this season. With their 3-match winning run ended, United extended their unbeaten run to 5 matches and climbed to fourth place. City, meanwhile, remain second behind Chelsea on goal difference.
