Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle admission: "We need to improve very quickly"

Matthias Jaissle admitted his Newcastle United side "need to improve very quickly" after their 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Thierno Barry scored the only goal of the game at St James' Park to give the visitors victory, while Newcastle's Jacob Ramsey was sent off in stoppage time.

The defeat came hot on the heels of Everton knocking Newcastle out of the League Cup last week. Everton have now won all three of their meetings with Newcastle across all competitions in 2026.

No team has lost more Premier League home matches in 2026 than Newcastle (7 defeats). The Magpies have also lost 16 of their last 18 league matches in which they conceded the first goal (1 win, 1 draw). Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 consecutive home league matches, the worst such run in the club's history.

Newcastle did not register their first shot on target until the 85th minute, through substitute Yoane Wissa, and head coach Jaissle stressed that the picture on the pitch has to change.

"There was none of our style of play in today's performance, and that is unacceptable. We need to improve very quickly. We have to instil in our players the belief that they have the strength to do this and the potential to play this way. We are going through a difficult period and we can only overcome it together," Jaissle said after the match.

Continuing his self-criticism, the head coach added: "Unfortunately we didn't deliver what we wanted for the full 90 minutes; that wasn't our game or our style. That left us very disappointed and upset. If you can't show up on the pitch when it matters, you don't deserve to win. We weren't brave enough on the ball and we played too many long balls. We worked hard and our preparation looked good, but we couldn't carry it onto the pitch. We'll do a detailed analysis tomorrow and try to put things right against Fulham."
