Winless Tottenham host in-form Coventry City on Monday night in the Premier League's seventh round, with Frank Lampard's side chasing a third straight win.
Tottenham Hotspur host Frank Lampard's Coventry City on Monday evening in the seventh round of Premier League fixtures. Kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is at 21:00 CEST / 20:00 UK time. Both sides go into a crucial game looking to climb out of the bottom half of the table, but on current form the visitors hold the edge.
Tottenham still searching for a first win
Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham have collected just 3 points from their opening six league games, with three draws and three defeats, and sit in the relegation zone. Last time out the north London side drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford: having fallen behind to a Bryan Mbeumo goal, they levelled in stoppage time through Dominic Solanke. In the same game, however, Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card following an incident with Luke Shaw, and the resulting three-match ban rules him out against Coventry.
The hosts also have a lengthy injury list. De Zerbi confirmed that Savio, who has a muscle problem, will be out for "a few weeks", while Lucas Bergvall, who injured his knee at Manchester, is sidelined for around two weeks. Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mykhailo Mudryk are also missing through injury, and Pedro Porro's return may have to wait until the Chelsea game.
The good news for Tottenham concerns Dejan Kulusevski. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, De Zerbi said: "Yes, Kulusevski on the bench. We had a meeting with the medical staff, they gave the okay and it's great news." On his side's attacking output, the Italian added: "my work is to improve the team to create 20 chances to score. And if they are not enough, 25 to 30." Of the opposition, he said: "Coventry is a good team. They played a fantastic Championship last season."
Coventry arrive on the back of two straight wins
Back in the Premier League after a 25-year absence, Coventry City lost their first four games of the season but have won their last two to move on to 6 points. On 19 September, Lampard's side beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground through a Jay Dasilva goal, their first top-flight win in 25 years. Then on 12 October they thrashed Newcastle United 4-1. Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni were on the scoresheet; Newcastle enjoyed 67 per cent possession and had 19 shots, but Coventry turned four of their six shots on target into goals. It was Coventry's first home Premier League win in more than a quarter of a century and lifted them out of the relegation zone.
Taiwo Awoniyi returns to the visitors' squad after serving his suspension, and Lampard is expected to choose between him and Sidiki Cherif, who scored against Newcastle, to lead the line. Haji Wright, however, is injured and will be unavailable until November.
For Tottenham, this is a vital opportunity to secure a first win of the season and move away from the drop zone. Coventry, meanwhile, are aiming for a third successive victory to keep their Premier League comeback campaign on the rise.
