Turkish Clubs' Heaviest European Defeats: Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş and Galatasaray on the List

Turkish football's representatives in Europe ended the week with heavy defeats. Fenerbahçe lost 6-0 away at Aston Villa, while Galatasaray were beaten 4-1 by Barcelona. The yellow-and-navies' result in England ranks among the heaviest defeats in the club's history.

Fenerbahçe's 6-0 defeat to Aston Villa went down as the third-heaviest loss in the yellow-and-navy side's history across all competitions. Fenerbahçe had previously lost 7-0 to Benfica in 1975 and 7-1 to Sigma Olomouc in 1992. The Aston Villa match marked the first time in many years that the yellow-and-navies had lost a competitive match by six goals. One of the club's heaviest European defeats in recent times was the 6-1 loss to Danish side Nordsjaelland in the UEFA Conference League in the 2023/24 season.

Turkish Clubs' Heaviest Defeats in Europe

Fenerbahçe's 6-0 result against Aston Villa was one of the heaviest thrashings in the history of Turkish clubs in European competition. Top of the list is Beşiktaş, who lost 8-0 away to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League in the 2007/08 season. The yellow-and-navies' defeat to Aston Villa shares second place with the other Turkish sides that have lost by six goals. Galatasaray's 6-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the 2019/20 season is also on that rung.

Beşiktaş lost 6-0 to Leeds United in 2000/01 and by the same score to Dynamo Kyiv in 2016/17. Akhisarspor's 6-0 defeat to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League in the 2018/19 season is also high on the list. After the six-goal thrashings come the five-goal defeats. Fenerbahçe's 6-1 loss to Nordsjaelland, Galatasaray's 6-1 defeat to Real Madrid in 2013/14 and Bursaspor's 6-1 loss to Valencia in 2010/11 are among the other notable results.

Galatasaray High in Champions League History

Galatasaray, who finished the week with a 4-1 defeat to Barcelona, also stand out for their total number of defeats in Champions League history. The yellow-and-reds are fifth among the teams with the most losses in the competition's history, with 85 defeats in 175 matches in the European Cup and Champions League. Real Madrid top the list with 121 defeats in 516 matches, followed by Benfica with 101 and Porto with 89. Galatasaray share their place with Olympiakos and Bayern Munich on 85 defeats each.
