Villarreal 0-6 Paris Saint-Germain: Fabián scores twice as clinical champions make history

Fabián Ruiz scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain made history in their 6-0 battering of Villarreal that saw them stay perfect through four matches of the Champions League.

The defending champions were four goals to the good inside just 17 first-half minutes at Estadio de la Cerámica on Tuesday. Indeed, the four goals they scored after 16 minutes and two seconds is the fastest a team has ever scored four goals in the competition's history.

João Neves' clever flick got the ball rolling, before Désiré Doué and Senny Mayulu benefited from two poor Péter Gulácsi clearances, and Fabián hammered in a fourth.

Fabián was on target again five minutes after the restart and teenage defender David Boly bagged off the bench as Luis Enrique's side made it 12 points from a possible 12.

Neves got PSG up and running, ingeniously picking out the top corner inside the six-yard box when Villarreal failed to clear their lines at a ninth-minute corner.

Gulácsi made a hash of a routine clearance that led to Doué rolling into the bottom-left corner after being teed up by Maghnes Akliouche, and another poor moment from the Villarreal goalkeeper eventually led to Mayulu pouncing with an effort he drilled into the floor after Neves' effort was blocked.

By the time Fabián slashed a bouncing ball into the bottom-left corner in the 17th minute, it was over as a contest, though the Spaniard and Doué almost stretched the lead before half-time.

Fabián had a wonderful second early in the second half, brilliantly taking down Vitinha's long pass, cutting inside Renato Veiga and flicking past Gulácsi.

There was time for another, as Neves picked out Boly on the right of the area, and the 17-year-old smashed his effort high past Gulácsi via a deflection off Veiga before wheeling away in delight at his first Champions League goal.

PSG turn it on to make it four from four

In truth, this game was over by the 17th minute, and PSG are now four wins from four to sit top of the league-phase standings.

By half-time, the Ligue 1 giants had already accrued eight shots on target to Villarreal's one, and a superior expected goals (xG) of 1.72 to 0.17, which was 2.69 to 0.66 by full time.

PSG are now unbeaten in 14 games in the Champions League (10 wins, four draws), equalling the longest unbeaten run by a French side in European Cup/Champions League history after Lyon did so between December 2004 and March 2006.

The Parisiens are unbeaten in five Champions League away games against Spanish opposition since Luis Enrique took charge (four wins, one draw), having only won two of 12 such contests prior to his arrival (three draws, seven defeats).

Doué has now been directly involved in 22 goals in 32 Champions League appearances (13 goals, nine assists) for PSG – the second most by a Frenchman aged 21 or under, behind only Kylian Mbappé (37).

PSG sit top of the standings and next host Roma in the Champions League on November 25, and they look like a team that will be extremely difficult to beat again this season. Villarreal, conversely, are down in 29th.
