AC Milan 3-1 Inter: Mesmerising Moreira ends the champions' unbeaten run

Diego Moreira starred with a free-kick goal and two assists as AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 in the Derby della Madonnina, ending their arch-rivals' unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

Ruben Amorim's side tore into the contest at San Siro like a whirlwind, and it took the Belgian just 10 minutes to set up goals for Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot.

Alessandro Bastoni scored his first goal in his 20th career derby to bring Inter back into the game midway through the first half, but Moreira's magic restored the gap. The young star found the net with a superb set-piece strike in the 43rd minute to re-establish Milan's two-goal advantage, and the Rossoneri never relinquished control in the second half.

Moreira, who had missed the midweek 4-2 defeat to Bologna through injury and returned to the starting line-up, needed only four minutes to make his mark. Cutting inside from the right touchline, he whipped a left-footed cross towards the back post, and Pulisic headed it into the corner.

The Rossoneri's second goal looked as if it had come straight off the training ground. Rabiot met Moreira's low corner, and his elegant chipped effort cleared the crowded penalty area, came off the far post and nestled in the net.

Inter pulled one back in the 22nd minute through a set-piece routine. From Hakan Çalhanoğlu's corner, Manuel Akanji looped the ball on and Bastoni headed home. The Nerazzurri also came close to an equaliser, but Mike Maignan produced a superb reflex save to deny Djed Spence.

Yet it was Moreira again who settled the first-half scoreline. The 22-year-old produced a sublime left-footed free kick from 25 metres that left Josep Martínez helpless.

It came as a surprise that Carlos Augusto, who had endured a torrid first 45 minutes against Moreira, continued after the break, and the Brazilian failed to hit the target with a diving header in the 56th minute. Cristian Chivu's side enjoyed a brief glimmer of hope when Marco Guida pointed to the spot for a Mario Gila handball, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review showed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan's cross had struck the Spanish defender's chest.

Offering little for the remainder beyond a blocked volley from Ange-Yoan Bonny, Inter resigned themselves to defeat, and the final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations on the Milan side.

Enjoying one of the finest nights of his career, Moreira took the ball from Pulisic and Luka Modrić to step up for the free kick after his two assists, and wrote his name into one of football's greatest rivalries.
