Goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer gave Bayern Munich a 2-0 Champions League win away at Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Bayern Munich beat Atlético Madrid 2-0 away from home in the Champions League at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, with goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer.
The first half in the Spanish capital was played at a low tempo, with both sides struggling to find a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. The hosts came close through Julián Álvarez and Pablo Barrios but could not find the breakthrough, and the teams went into the break goalless.
The German giants took complete control after the interval and went 1-0 up in the 54th minute, when 17-year-old Lennart Karl punished a major error from Robin Le Normand with a deft chipped finish. In the 74th minute, Konrad Laimer collected Harry Kane's pass on the right side of the penalty area and beat Jan Oblak with a powerful, well-placed strike to make it 2-0 and settle the contest.
Playing under Aaron Banks in the absence of the still-unwell Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich moved into the top 8 of the Champions League with this win. Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, slipped as low as 21st, dealing a blow to their hopes of progressing.
Harry Kane missed the chance to equal Cristiano Ronaldo's record of scoring in 11 consecutive Champions League matches, but still played a key part in the win with his assist. Young star Lennart Karl, meanwhile, scored his 5th goal in Europe's elite competition and continues to write his name into the club's history books.
