Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt: Beier's Stunning Goal Sends Dortmund Top of the Bundesliga
Substitute Maximilian Beier struck a superb late winner as Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 on Saturday to go top of the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 on Saturday to move to the top of the Bundesliga. Substitute Maximilian Beier delivered the win with a magnificent late goal.
Ahead of Bayern Munich's game against Freiburg on Sunday, Niko Kovac's side opened up a 3-point lead at the summit, piling the pressure on their rivals.
Dortmund started quickly at Signal Iduna Park, and as early as the 9th minute Fabio Silva headed over the bar. Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu then denied Serhou Guirassy, who had unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box.
Atubolu stopped Guirassy once again shortly afterwards, while in Frankfurt's first dangerous attack, Jonathan Burkardt's effort from around 20 metres flashed just wide of the right post.
For Dortmund, midfielder Joey Veerman posed a major threat with his set-piece expertise. In the 31st minute, Veerman whipped a series of dangerous crosses into the box, but neither Guirassy nor Felix Nmecha could find the target.
Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made his first save in the 34th minute, keeping out Younes Ebnoutalib's close-range effort. Right at the start of the second half, Kobel produced a superb reflex save to tip away Fares Chaibi's fierce shot that was heading for the top corner.
Dortmund came close once more when Guirassy met another pinpoint Veerman cross, only to see his header crash against the crossbar.
With chances for Ramy Bensebaini and Julian Ryerson also going begging, it looked as though Dortmund would have to settle for a point, but substitute Beier then took centre stage.
The young German controlled Jobe Bellingham's pass on the edge of the box before curling a brilliant finish into the far corner, leaving Atubolu helpless. The goal brought Signal Iduna Park to its feet and carried Dortmund to the top of the Bundesliga.
Unbeatable at Home
Although Bayern Munich's dominance of the league has often left Dortmund in the shadows, Kovac's players are proving this season that they are serious title contenders.
Victories like Saturday's, even if not the most spectacular, could play a crucial role in keeping Dortmund in the title race until the very end.
Indeed, Kovac's side have collected 17 points from the first 7 matchdays of the league. That is Dortmund's best start since the 2023-24 season, when they reached the same tally. The Black and Yellows last collected more points (19) at this stage of the league in the 2017-18 season.
Dortmund also maintained their dominance over Eintracht Frankfurt. In Bundesliga history, they have not recorded as many league wins (53) or home victories (40) against any other opponent as they have against Frankfurt.
Dortmund have won 15 of their last 16 home league matches against Frankfurt, with their only defeat in that run coming in April 2021 (2-1).
Having kept a clean sheet in 5 of their first 7 league games this season, the Black and Yellows have also equalled the club record they set in the 2020-21 season.
Although their wastefulness in front of goal almost proved costly, Dortmund struck at the death to leave the pitch with all 3 points.
