Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez targets quick return after breaking his jaw

Emiliano Martínez, who broke his jaw in Chelsea's Premier League win over Everton, has said he hopes to return to action "in a few weeks".

Play was halted for around eight minutes in the second half of the match, which the Blues won 2-0 thanks to goals from Pedro Neto, while Martínez received treatment. The experienced goalkeeper, who suffered an unfortunate clash of heads with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, was taken straight to hospital.

Mike Penders, the 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper who came off the bench to replace Martínez, is expected to be given a regular starting spot in the absence of the first-choice keeper, who has undergone successful jaw surgery.

Before the upcoming international break, Chelsea will face Tottenham, Manchester United and Sunderland in the Premier League, as well as travelling to Liverpool in the League Cup.

Sharing a photo from his hospital room, Martínez said in a statement on social media: "Thank you to everyone who sent messages. The surgery went well. The most important thing was that we won the game and kept a clean sheet. We'll be back in a few weeks."

Martínez, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa this summer, has conceded 11 goals in six matches in all competitions for the London club and has yet to finish a match without conceding.
