Harry Kane on a 'strange' Der Klassiker: "I could have played until morning and still not scored"
Bayern Munich star striker Harry Kane said he felt he would not have scored even if he had stayed out all night on a "strange night" that ended 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern Munich star striker Harry Kane said he felt he would not have scored even if he had stayed out on the pitch all night on a "strange night" that ended in a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
The season's first Der Klassiker finished level at 2-2 on Saturday, with Fábio Silva's 89th-minute goal earning Dortmund a point at the Allianz Arena. Goals from Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano for Bayern were answered by Serhou Guirassy and Fábio Silva for Borussia Dortmund.
One of the defining moments of the match came in the 56th minute, with Bayern 1-0 up, when Harry Kane sent his penalty over the crossbar. It was only the second miss from 27 penalty attempts in the England star's Bundesliga career. The experienced striker, who generated 0.98 expected goals (xG) but failed to hit the target with any of his 6 shots, will want to forget the game.
Kane's 6 shots off target were the second-highest total in a single Bundesliga match this season, behind the 7 inaccurate efforts from Hoffenheim's Fisnik Asllani against Werder Bremen.
Unable to hide his disappointment, the England forward said after the match:
"It probably wasn't my best performance or the team's, but that's life. It's part of being a striker and a footballer. If I'd stayed out there for another hour, that ball still wouldn't have gone in! Sometimes you just have to accept that. It was a strange night from start to finish."
Kane did, however, provide the assist for Upamecano's goal, bringing him to his 8th assist in 13 appearances across all competitions this season, already surpassing his assist tally for the whole of last season (51 matches). The only player in Europe's top five leagues with more assists than Kane this season is Lamine Yamal (11).
With Bayern and Dortmund both unbeaten after the first eight matchdays and level at the top on 18 points apiece, midfielder Joshua Kimmich argued that his side deserved the win:
"I think this was our third draw in the league, and the game never needed to end like this. Especially when you look at how we played in the second half, I don't think a draw was a fair result, but sometimes these things happen in football. Dortmund didn't give up and stayed in the game until the very end. We should have won clearly, but at the end of the day we have to accept this point."
Bayern Munich, led by Aaron Danks in place of Vincent Kompany, who is recovering from illness, travel to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday before facing Mainz in the league at the weekend.
