Is Sergen Yalçın set to take charge of Turkey? TFF reportedly makes an offer

Sergen Yalçın has emerged as a leading name for the head coach position with the Turkey national team. It has been claimed that the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has made an official offer to the experienced coach, who was most recently in charge of Beşiktaş. While reports suggesting Yalçın will become the new boss of the Crescent-Stars are gaining momentum, no official statement has yet been made. The TFF is expected to announce its final decision publicly after the board meeting at which it will be taken.

According to the claims, TFF officials have contacted Sergen Yalçın and conveyed their offer for the Turkey head coach role. The federation's board is reportedly set to discuss the matter at its meeting and clarify the process.

Domestic double with Beşiktaş

Sergen Yalçın began his coaching career as an assistant coach in Beşiktaş's academy and went on to work at numerous Süper Lig clubs, including Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor and Yeni Malatyaspor.

After taking over at Beşiktaş in January 2020, Yalçın achieved a historic feat in the 2020/21 season by leading the Black Eagles to both the Süper Lig title and the Turkish Cup. Following the end of his first Beşiktaş spell in December 2021, the experienced coach took charge of Antalyaspor in January 2024, before later returning to the Black-and-Whites.

Also regarded as one of Turkish football's legendary figures from his playing days, Sergen Yalçın is one of the rare players to have represented all of the 'Big Four' – Beşiktaş, Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor. The former number 10 scored 105 goals in 347 Süper Lig matches and earned 37 caps for the Turkey national team, scoring 5 goals.

The 53-year-old, who has coached only club sides to date, would take on a national-team role for the first time in his career should the deal be made official.
