Leeds United 1-1 Manchester United: Carrick's men pegged back as winless run continues

Manchester United failed to ease the pressure on Michael Carrick as their winless run stretched to six games in all competitions following a 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
After seeing Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancel out Bryan Mbeumo's strike, the Red Devils have still not tasted victory since beating Sabah in their Champions League opener in early September, while they have also gone five Premier League matches without a win.
And things could have been even worse as Leeds had the better chances to win Sunday's game in the second half, with Anton Stach wasting arguably their clearest opportunity.
Though there were no major chances in the opening 25 minutes, there was no shortage of commitment from both sides, with Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson among those to put in tough early tackles.
Leeds almost drew first blood when Nico Elvedi's downward header from a Stach free-kick was pushed away by Senne Lammens, but Man Utd soon passed up an even bigger chance as Mbeumo headed Youri Tielemans' searching cross wide.
Mbeumo would make no mistake when the same player provided a pinpoint, low delivery from the right flank in the 35th minute, though, as he stretched and flicked the ball into the bottom-left corner.
Leeds had a couple of half chances before the interval, but Calvert-Lewin was unable to trouble Lammens with a header and James Justin failed to get enough power behind his shot following a marauding run.
But the hosts' pressure paid dividends six minutes into the second half, with Calvert-Lewin well-placed to volley past Lammens after Tarik Muharemovic flicked Stach's corner on.
Ao Tanaka, Noah Okafor and Stach all fired efforts into the stands as Leeds remained in the ascendency, with the latter's chance being the clearest after Diogo Dalot headed the ball straight to him, just inside the Man Utd area.
At the other end, Fernandes went close to finding the bottom-left corner, but Carrick's side were lacklustre even after the introduction of Matheus Cunha, and Lukas Nmecha and Stach both had opportunities to win it for Leeds amid a late goalmouth scramble.
Man Utd pegged back again as Calvert-Lewin maintains home form
United failed to cling on for a morale-boosting victory after Mbeumo put them in front, and that has been something of a theme in the early stages of 2026-27.
Three of Mbeumo's four Premier League goals this season have put Man Utd 1-0 up, with only Erling Haaland (four) boasting more such goals this term.
However, on each of the last three occasions where the Cameroonian has given them the lead, the Red Devils have gone on to draw (also versus Everton and Tottenham).
When Leeds needed a goal, it was no surprise to see Calvert-Lewin step up – he has now scored in six of his last seven home Premier League games (seven goals overall) and boasts eight Premier League goals since the start of April – only Haaland (13) has more in that span.
Furthermore, since Calvert-Lewin's first home game for Leeds last season, his 12 Premier League goals at Elland Road are the third-most scored by any player at a particular venue, after Haaland at the Etihad Stadium (19) and Igor Thiago at the Gtech Community Stadium (14).
And after all is said and done, Carrick may be relieved to even leave Yorkshire with a point, after Leeds edged the expected goals (xG) tally by 1.44 to 0.91 – 1.19 of that tally came in the second half.
