Liverpool 2-0 Brighton: Isak on target again as Iraola claims first home win
Alexander Isak scored in a third straight Premier League game as Liverpool ended Brighton's superb run with a 2-0 win at home.
Alexander Isak scored in a third consecutive Premier League game as Liverpool brought Brighton's superb run to an end with a 2-0 victory at home.
Brighton arrived at Anfield in third place, buoyed by a four-match winning streak in which they had scored 15 goals without reply. Liverpool, however, halted their momentum by racing into a 2-0 lead inside 21 minutes.
The game could have taken a very different course had Yasin Ayari taken a clear early chance for the visitors, but the Swede failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy. Brighton paid a heavy price for that miss when Florian Wirtz's shot deflected in off the unfortunate Pascal Gross.
Isak then took centre stage, getting a touch on Bradley Barcola's pinpoint cross to make it 2-0. It was the first time since January 2025 that the striker had scored in three successive Premier League matches.
Ayari struck the post after a major error from Alisson Becker, but Brighton's attacking threat faded in the second half. When Maxim De Cuyper found himself in the most dangerous position, young Trey Nyoni, on as a replacement for the injured Wirtz, made a crucial intervention to deny him.
Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 127 Premier League home games in which they have led by at least two goals at half-time, winning 124 and drawing 3, and that record held firm against Brighton.
The result gave Andoni Iraola his first league win at Anfield as Liverpool boss, while sparing the Reds the historic nightmare of failing to win any of their first four home games of the season.
