Luis Enrique's clear message after historic win: 'It means nothing'

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique said the historic 6-0 win over Villarreal "means nothing" at this stage.

In Tuesday's match, PSG were already 4-0 up by the 17th minute. It went down as the second-fastest four-goal start by a team in Champions League/European Cup history, behind only Benfica, who reached four goals in the 16th minute against Újpest in November 1960.

PSG, winners of the last two seasons, also became the first team in Champions League history to score 4 or more goals in four consecutive matches.

The Paris side, who have put together a run of 10 straight wins in all competitions for the second time under Luis Enrique, have reached 20 goals in just four Champions League matches this season, making them the quickest team in the competition's history to hit 20 goals in a single season.

Despite a superb start to their bid for a third straight title, Luis Enrique stressed the need to keep their feet on the ground, telling reporters: "This result means nothing for now."

The Spanish coach added: "There will be only one champion at the final in Madrid. In the last two seasons we finished the league phase outside the top eight and still went on to win the title. I'm happy to see the team's hunger, but we will really have to prove everything in February and March."

The experienced head coach also said: "Sometimes games can start like this, and we put on an impressive performance from start to finish. We're happy, but it's a difficult situation for Villarreal, because it's not easy to play against a team that presses high all the time. We have to keep staying calm."

Villarreal, who conceded six goals in a match for the first time in their history in European competition, also became the first Spanish team to concede six at home on the European stage. The Spanish side have collected only three points from four matches in the 36-team league phase and sit 29th.

Villarreal head coach Íñigo Pérez said after the match: "We're in a bad place, we're practically devastated. We started the way we wanted, we tried to get the crowd going, but then we hit rock bottom and couldn't recover from that blow. We didn't even come close to their level."

The goals that delivered PSG's historic win were scored by Fabián Ruiz (2), João Neves, Désiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and David Boly.

The Paris side also became only the second team, after Real Madrid's run between December 2013 and April 2014, to record 10 or more shots on target in four consecutive Champions League matches.
