West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his team are continuing to build momentum after a crucial win over Championship leaders Swansea City.
West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his team are continuing to build momentum after a crucial win over Championship leaders Swansea City.
The London side won Saturday's match 1-0 to climb to second in the table, just one point behind Swansea. Divine Mukasa scored the only goal of the game, finishing from around the penalty spot after a clever pass from Mohamadou Kante.
In a match that was a great tactical battle, Swansea failed to hit the target with any of their 11 attempts, while West Ham edged the expected goals (xG) figures 1.2 to 1.0. Although most of Swansea's threat came from set pieces, Nuno was pleased with his team's discipline on the pitch.
Assessing the match afterwards, Nuno said: "I think the players did a very good job. On the whole we produced an extremely organised, excellent performance in which we created chances; at some moments luck was on our side too. Swansea are a very dynamic and quick team, keeping them under control is not easy, but overall we stayed organised and caused them serious problems. It was a very high-tempo and enjoyable football match. We saw tremendous saves from goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux; as a former goalkeeper, perhaps I always give those saves their due."
Emphasising the team's development, the Portuguese coach said: "I think we are gaining momentum. The table is important, of course, but more important is how we keep improving. I still believe there are things we can do much better."
In another key Championship fixture of the day, Middlesbrough missed the chance to go top as they drew 2-2 away at Cardiff City. Boro, who trailed 2-0 at half-time, salvaged a point with second-half goals from Tommy Conway and Will Lankshear.
