Steven Gerrard: I Have No Regrets About Turning Down Real Madrid, Inter and Bayern
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says he has no regrets about staying at Anfield despite interest from giants such as Real Madrid, Inter and Bayern Munich.
Legendary Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said he has no regrets about choosing to stay at Anfield despite interest from giants such as Real Madrid, Inter and Bayern Munich.
Over a 17-year career with Liverpool, the former England midfielder made 710 appearances, scoring 186 goals and winning 8 trophies. Gerrard captained the side in the 2005 Champions League final, when they produced a historic comeback against AC Milan, and also lifted 2 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 1 UEFA Super Cup. However, he never won the Premier League title during his career.
Both Real Madrid and Inter showed strong interest in Gerrard during Jose Mourinho's spells in charge, while in 2015 Bayern Munich wanted to bring him in as an alternative to Bastian Schweinsteiger. Gerrard was also linked with Chelsea on several occasions.
Gerrard, who said he admires the success of English stars such as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham abroad, stressed that he stands by his decision to stay at Liverpool.
Speaking on a programme, Gerrard said:
"There was interest from foreign clubs, and most of it came from Jose Mourinho. Inter and Real Madrid came up a few times. Towards the end of my career, there were some talks with my agent when Schweinsteiger was leaving Bayern. But to be honest, I wasn't really interested, because at that time I never thought about leaving Liverpool. When the offer came, I was enjoying my football under Brendan Rodgers. Still, having clubs that big show interest throughout my career was a source of huge pride. When you see Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane achieving success with clubs abroad, of course you look back and think about it. But I don't have the slightest regret about the decisions I made. I'm absolutely not regretful."
