James Maddison said scoring on his return to Tottenham's starting line-up after the "dark days" of his injury lay-off was "a dream".
The England international, making his first Premier League start since the match against Liverpool in April 2025, put his side ahead in the 14th minute of Tottenham's 3-1 win over Coventry City with a superb strike from outside the box.
Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies added the other goals for Roberto De Zerbi's side, while Jack Rudoni scored the visitors' only goal.
It was Maddison's 21st goal from outside the box since his Premier League debut in August 2018, strengthening his place at the top of that list ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and James Ward-Prowse (19 goals each).
Maddison, who went through a lengthy rehabilitation after rupturing his ACL last August, was starting for the first time since the 2024-25 Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt. An emotional Maddison said after the match: "My emotions are a bit mixed. These are the moments you dream of. Those dark days after the ACL injury last year... These goals are the light at the end of the tunnel. I was proud for Dejan Kulusevski too, because I know exactly how he's been feeling. Moments like these and the goals we score make it all worth it."
Dejan Kulusevski, named in a matchday squad for the first time in 526 days, came on for Mohammed Kudus in the 87th minute and received a standing ovation from the stands.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, given breathing space ahead of the weekend's derby against Chelsea, stressed the importance of the win: "I'm very happy with the result, our attitude on the pitch, our fighting spirit and the reaction after we conceded. To be honest, we didn't play as well as in recent matches, but the opposition also defended in a very organised way. Because of injuries, we opted for a back three."
