Tottenham 3-1 Coventry City: Maddison, Marmoush and Davies end winless run

Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham earned some breathing space with a 3-1 win over Coventry City, as Omar Marmoush scored his first goal for the club.
Without a win in their first 6 Premier League games of the season, Spurs would have moved a step closer to equalling the worst start to a campaign in the club’s league history had they dropped points. But at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a classy finish from Marmoush and a stoppage-time goal from Ben Davies secured all three points for the London side.
James Maddison, making his first competitive start for Tottenham since May 2025, opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Against his former club Coventry, he collected Mohammed Kudus’s pass on the edge of the box and curled a superb finish into the top-left corner.
Spurs failed to extend their lead after Dominic Solanke had a goal ruled out for offside, and Coventry drew level early in the second half when the in-form Jack Rudoni struck from close range.
The hosts upped the pressure after the equaliser, and Marmoush restored their lead, skipping past Milan van Ewijk before bending a shot in from outside the area. In the 96th minute, Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth made a costly error from Davies’s effort and the ball ended up in the net to settle the contest.
Kulusevski back after 526 days
The game carried special significance for two Tottenham stars who have come through a difficult year. Maddison, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, returned to the starting line-up after a long absence.
The biggest comeback, however, belonged to Dejan Kulusevski. Named in a Premier League matchday squad for the first time in 526 days, the Swede came on to warm applause in the 87th minute.
Despite finishing the match with an expected goals (xG) tally of just 0.87, Spurs became the first team since May 2023 to score three goals from outside the box in a Premier League game.
The win lifts De Zerbi’s side above Coventry and up to 16th in the table, with an away trip to Chelsea to come at the weekend.
