Maguire: "Martinez's Outburst Is Behind Us Now"
Harry Maguire insists Lisandro Martinez's recent outspoken comments are in the past as Manchester United look to turn their fortunes around.
Harry Maguire has stressed that team-mate Lisandro Martinez's outspoken comments of recent days are now in the past as Manchester United look to turn their fortunes around.
Martinez had launched a scathing attack on the club's hierarchy following the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine defender took aim at the coaching staff and the club's owners, claiming the Red Devils do not have a squad capable of competing in Europe.
However, Martinez later issued a statement on social media, saying responsibility for the poor results starts with the team, and apologised for his remarks. Michael Carrick handed Martinez a start in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United, but the experienced centre-back was forced off at half-time with an injury and replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.
Asked about Martinez, Maguire said: "As there is every week, there was a lot of noise around the club last week, maybe even a bit more than usual. Lisandro came out and apologised. We've put it behind us. He played in the game and I thought he was excellent in the first half. We're hoping it's nothing serious and that he'll be back with us quickly."
Manchester United have won just one of their seven Premier League matches this season (D4, L2). That represents the Red Devils' worst league start since the 1986-87 season, when they also had only one win after seven league games. United, whose last victory in all competitions came against Sabah in the Champions League on 10 September, have also won just one of their last 10 Champions League away matches (D3, L6).
Asked whether the mood in the dressing room had been affected by Martinez's criticism, Maguire replied:
"If you play for this club, you're always being tested, especially in spells when you're not winning games. We're not playing at a level good enough to win games like we did last season. We're being tested every week and the players have to get used to that. Everyone has to find the strength within themselves to help the team. We'll stick together and fight back. We've got another big game on Wednesday and we're looking forward to it."
