One of the Worst Starts in Samsunspor History: Just 4 Points from 9 Matchweeks

Samsunspor have started the 2026/27 Süper Lig season far below expectations, recording one of the worst league starts in the club's history. With just 1 win and 1 draw from the opening 9 matchweeks, Samsunspor sit 17th with 4 points. The club have lost each of their last 7 league matches, conceding 21 goals in that run while scoring only 8.

The 4 points Samsunspor collected in the first 9 matchweeks this season go down as one of the lowest points tallies in the club's Süper Lig history. Under the three-points-for-a-win system, only the 1991/92 season was worse. In that campaign, Samsunspor failed to win any of their first 9 matches, collecting 3 points from 3 draws and 6 defeats. Samsunspor took 5 points from the first 9 matchweeks of 2023/24, the season they returned to the Süper Lig, and this season they have fallen short even of that performance from 3 years ago.

Samsunspor's worst first-9-matchweek records in Süper Lig history:

  • 2026/27: 1 win, 1 draw, 7 defeats (4 points)
  • 1991/92: 0 wins, 3 draws, 6 defeats (3 points)
  • 1998/99: 1 win, 2 draws, 6 defeats (5 points)
  • 2023/24: 1 win, 2 draws, 6 defeats (5 points)
  • 1982/83: 2 wins, 1 draw, 6 defeats (7 points)

The poor results also prompted a change in the dugout. Thorsten Fink, appointed in February 2026, parted ways with the club on 12 October. The German coach had averaged 1.48 points per game across his 25 matches in charge of Samsunspor. Nenad Bjelica, who took over from Fink on 14 October, has failed to pick up a point in his first 2 league matches at the helm.

Samsunspor lost key players in the summer transfer window and, despite generating significant transfer income, have struggled to find their footing on the pitch. 19-year-old centre-back Ali Badra Diabaté joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah for €8 million, while Marius Mouandilmadji was sold to Olympiakos for €7 million, Carlo Holse to St. Louis CITY for €5.2 million and Rick van Drongelen to Panathinaikos for €5 million.

The young players brought into the squad have yet to make the expected impact. The club paid a €3 million fee for Gabriele Guarino, €2.5 million each for Oskar Øhlenschlæger and Igor Drapiński, €2.2 million for Antoine Sekongo and €1.5 million for Mohamed Bayo, signed from Lille.

Having opened the season with a 3-3 draw against Göztepe, Samsunspor have since suffered a string of dropped points and defeats and are now fighting to climb out of the bottom places.
