Scott Parker era begins at West Ham
West Ham United have appointed Scott Parker as head coach after the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo, with the former player vowing to take the club back to the Premier League.
West Ham United have announced the appointment of Scott Parker as head coach following the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo. Parker, a former player at the club, struck a confident tone about taking the London side back to the Premier League.
The 46-year-old, who made 129 appearances for West Ham during his playing career, has signed a 2.5-year contract with the club. The board decided to part ways with Nuno after defeats to Southampton and West Bromwich Albion left the team six points behind leaders Middlesbrough. The Portuguese coach, who had replaced Graham Potter, won only 19 of his 53 matches in charge and was unable to prevent relegation from the Premier League last season.
A new chapter now opens under Parker, who has previously won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Parker said: "It is a source of immense pride to take on this role and return to a club that means so much to me and my family. I have wonderful memories here; those were four years in which I probably played the best football of my career. It's an opportunity that excites me greatly. To be the one who takes us back to the Premier League, and to be in charge of this club right now, is a privilege for me."
Highlighting his experience in the division, the English coach added: "I've competed in this league three times and won promotion on all three occasions. It's certainly a very tough league, but I will use every bit of my experience and knowledge to find consistency. Consistency will be our key word. Our determination and continuity will take us back to where we deserve to be."
Scott Parker, who left his previous club Burnley in April after winning 36 of his 88 matches there, will take charge of West Ham for the first time away at Cardiff City.
