Lyon confirm Paulo Fonseca is leaving for Sporting CP
Olympique Lyon have officially confirmed that head coach Paulo Fonseca is leaving mid-season for Portuguese side Sporting CP, with Jorge Maciel taking interim charge.
Head coach Paulo Fonseca is leaving Olympique Lyon, who are challenging at the top of Ligue 1, to take over at Portuguese side Sporting CP. In an official statement, the French club confirmed this "unexpected decision", adding that they deeply regret it, particularly as it comes in the middle of the season. Lyon will receive a significant transfer fee/compensation payment in return for his departure.
In recent days, reports that the Portuguese coach would sign for Sporting CP had gained momentum, with claims that a fee of more than 5 million euros would be paid. The Lyon board confirmed that figure and said the move had been approved because of the experienced coach's clear desire to join Sporting CP. The club's statement read: "In light of this clearly expressed wish, our board has concluded that the full commitment essential to the success of the project can no longer be guaranteed, and that continuing the collaboration would not be in the club's interest. At this critical stage of the season, Olympique Lyon believe that all energy must be united and focused on the objectives."
Fonseca took over from Pierre Sage in January 2025. Until a permanent solution is found, Jorge Maciel will once again lead the team on an interim basis, at least until the next international break. The interim head coach will be in charge for the UEFA Europa League clash with Real Sociedad and the league trip to Brest.
Fonseca won 47 of his 83 competitive matches in charge of Lyon, averaging 1.83 points per game. Lyon, who this season sit alongside Lille and Paris FC as the closest challengers to Ligue 1 leaders PSG, briefly moved to the top of the table on matchday 7.
