Cristiano Ronaldo handed €255 fine and 30-day ban by Portugal's disciplinary body

The punishment facing Cristiano Ronaldo over his row with the Portugal national team has finally been confirmed. Following a disciplinary inquiry, the veteran star, who left the national team camp early in September, has been handed a 255 euro fine and a 30-day ban. The ban being applied retroactively clears the way for Ronaldo to feature in November's UEFA Nations League fixtures, but whether he will return to the squad remains uncertain.

According to reports in the Portuguese press, the FPF Disciplinary Council opted for the lightest sanction available against Ronaldo. Although disciplinary regulations allowed for a ban of up to 6 months, the forward's suspension was limited to 30 days. Moreover, the ban was backdated to begin on 30 September. As a result, Ronaldo is said to have already served a significant part of the suspension, with the remainder set to expire before November's international fixtures.

Cristiano Ronaldo left the national team camp early during the September international break after failing to get any minutes in Portugal's 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Norway. The experienced forward later accused Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking a promise he had made to him. In the aftermath, Ronaldo's international future became a subject of debate, and with the disciplinary process now concluded, attention has turned back to the coaching staff.

Once the ban has been served, there will be no disciplinary obstacle to Ronaldo playing in the UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark on 14 November and Wales on 17 November. However, whether the veteran will be recalled to the squad will only become clear after talks between the two parties. Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 146 goals for Portugal, is aiming to pass the 150-goal mark in his international career.
