From €20 Million Bids to Injury Nightmare: Arseniy Batagov Facing Another Spell on the Sidelines

Arseniy Batagov, who attracted the attention of European clubs in previous transfer windows and was reportedly the subject of offers approaching €20 million, cannot shake off his injury nightmare at Trabzonspor. The Ukrainian centre-back, regarded as one of the players the claret and blues hoped would bring in a substantial transfer fee, had begun a lengthy rehabilitation process after undergoing knee surgery. The 24-year-old, who has yet to feature in an official match this season, has been injured again shortly after returning to training with the squad.

Trabzonspor's Head of the Medical Board, Ahmet Beşir, explained that Batagov had completed his treatment on his right knee and rejoined team training, but felt pain in the front of his left thigh during a session. Clinical examinations and an MRI scan revealed widespread bleeding and oedema caused by an injury to the rectus femoris muscle and its intramuscular tendon in the left thigh. As a result of this unfortunate setback, the young centre-back is expected to be out of action for around 1.5 months.

A new injury after knee surgery

Batagov's physical problems began in the closing stages of last season. The Ukrainian suffered a partial tear of the knee ligaments and was sidelined for 132 days following an operation. Having completed his rehabilitation and set his sights on regaining his form, the muscle injury has delayed the young defender's return to action once again.

€20 million bids had been on the table

Batagov, who joined from Zorya Luhansk in August 2024, caught the eye with his impressive performances in claret and blue. The Ukrainian centre-back, said to have received offers of around €20 million in previous transfer windows, was seen as having the potential to bring in one of the highest transfer fees in the club's history. However, a succession of injuries has dealt a blow to the rise of the talented defender's career.
